Staff
- Karen Crompton, Executive Director, joined the organization in 2001. She had previously worked for Sears, Roebuck & Company for 17 years where she held a number of senior management positions. Karen was also a candidate for Salt Lake County Mayor in 2000. In 2006 Karen received the Florette Angel Award which is given annually by Voices for America's Children to the chief executive officer of a member organization who has "demonstrated exceptional leadership, perceptive organizational vision, innovative advocacy, and effective service on behalf of children and their families." She was honored by the YWCA in 2007 with the Outstanding Achievement Award in Government and Public Service and also received the Community Champions Award for Advocacy from Molina Healthcare in 2008. Karen is a 1971 graduate of the University of Utah.
- Laura Belgique, Health Policy Associate, joined the organization in 2009 and brings over 10 years of experience in health care programs and policies aimed at helping children. She previously worked as Regional Program Manager for the Utah Department of Health, where she managed Medicaid and CHIP programs statewide and developed and incorporated Medicaid education and application processes in different outreach settings in Utah. Laura graduated from the University of Utah with degrees in Psychology and Sociology.
- Korey Capozza, Senior Health Policy Analyst, joined the organization in 2008. She previously worked for the University of California Berkeley Labor Center where she provided research, analysis, and advocacy support to consumer and labor groups on statewide health reform, coverage expansion, and health care access and affordability. A Pew International Scholar and Knight Fellow, Korey received her Master's Degree in Health Policy and Management (MPH) from University of California, Berkeley, and Bachelor's Degree in American History from the University of Pennsylvania.
- Victor Copeland, Afterschool Policy Analyst, joined the organization in 2010. During his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Davis, his work as a caregiver for an autistic child inspired him to study law. While completing his Juris Doctorate from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, Victor worked as a special education advocate for children with disabilities. As a Public Service and Leadership Fellow at Pacific McGeorge's Education Pipeline Initiative, Victor received his Masters of Law in Public Law and Policy while overseeing law-related education programming for urban K-12 youth.
- Janis Dubno, Early Childhood and Education Senior Policy Analyst, joined the organization in 2008. She received a Master in Business Administration in Finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor's in Economics and Political Science from Yale College. Janis is a member of the Utah Tax Review Commission and a Board Member of the Utah Association for the Education of Young Children. She is also an adjunct professor in the finance department of the Gore School of Business at Westminster College.
- Terry Haven, KIDS COUNT Project Director, joined the organization in 1996. She researches and publishes the annual Utah KIDS COUNT data book that reports on the well-being of Utah's children by county. She also conducts trainings and provides technical assistance on data work relating to Voices' priority issues. Her academic background is in sociology, with a Bachelors degree and Masters degree from the University of Wyoming.
- Allison Rowland, Tax and Budget Director, joined the organization in 2007. She oversees the State Fiscal Analysis Initiative (SFAI) and Working Poor Families Project. Allison received her Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Yale University and her Masters and PhD in Policy, Planning and Development from the University of Southern California. Prior to joining Voices for Utah Children, Allison worked as a Professor at the Center for Research and Teaching of Economics in Mexico City for ten years. She is an adjunct professor in the Political Science Department at the University of Utah.
- Sara Gunderson, Office Manager and Executive Assistant, joined the organization in 2007. She has extensive administrative experience, including more than eight years in development at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Sara received her BS in Psychology at the University of Utah with a coursework emphasis in infant and child development.
